Mikroorganismen beherrschen die Welt: Sie finden sich in allen Lebensräumen der Erde und koexistieren mit Pflanzen, Tieren und Menschen. Das Zusammenspiel komplexer mikrobieller Gemeinschaften untereinander, mit höheren Organismen und mit ihrer unbelebten Umwelt bestimmt das Funktionieren von Ökosystemen, unser Klima und das Wohlergehen aller Lebewesen. Menschliche Aktivitäten oder infektiöse Mikroorganismen können diese mikrobiellen Gemeinschaften jedoch dramatisch stören. Die Folgen sind geschädigte Ökosysteme, Wetterextreme, schwere Ernteausfälle oder Krankheiten.

Unser Ziel ist es, die Entstehung und das Gleichgewicht mikrobieller Konsortien sowie deren Interaktionsnetzwerke zu verstehen, um innovative Lösungen gegen Krankheiten und ökologische Ungleichgewichte zu entwickeln. „Balance of the Microverse“ ist ein Exzellenzcluster an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena und wird durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) im Rahmen der Exzellenzstrategie des Bundes und der Länder gefördert.

Neben unserer Forschung liegt uns die Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses und der gesellschaftliche Dialog besonders am Herzen. Wir entwickeln und realisieren eigene MINT-Bildungsformate, um die faszinierende Welt der Mikroorganismen für Kinder, Jugendliche und die Öffentlichkeit greifbar zu machen.

Dabei setzen wir auf Vernetzung: Wir sind aktiv auf der Suche nach dem Austausch mit anderen Akteur:innen in den Bereichen Bildung und Kommunikation. Ob innovative Workshop-Konzepte, gemeinsame Projekte oder der Transfer von Forschungsergebnissen in den Schulunterricht – wir freuen uns über Impulse und Kooperationen, um die Begeisterung für mikrobiologische Themen nachhaltig zu teilen.
